On Sunday January 10 2016 the Epiphany Agreement was signed in St George’s Cathedral in Jerusalem by the Archbishop of Dublin and the Archbishop of Jerusalem.
The Epiphany Agreement commits to developing a link relationship of equal partners between the two dioceses which is sustainable, practical, effective, mutually supportive and mutually enriching.The aim of the link is to strengthen mission and evangelism in the church communities in both dioceses, to increase awareness between the dioceses of their solidarity in the cause of Christ, to respect and learn of and from each other’s cultural heritage and to enable the world to recognize more clearly God’s mission.The Jerusalem Link has its roots in the Diocesan Prepare a Place Appeal which raised over €180,000 for the Al Ahli Hospital in Gaza City, which is run by the Anglican Diocese of Jerusalem. The funds were used to improve facilities for on–call staff and install solar panels to ensure a more secure electricity supply for the hospital. This will reduce the hospital’s dependence on expensive generators which are needed as Gaza’s public electricity supply remains very limited.
In December 2016 Archbishop Suheil Dawani and his Chaplain, Canon David Longe, visited Dublin & Glendalough as part of the link. They visited locations throughout Dublin & Glendalough providing a picture of what life is like for Christians in the Land of the Holy One.
As part of the link, a study designed to broaden our knowledge of life in our partner diocese and gain an understanding of the issues of the region was undertaken last year and it is hoped to run it again in the dioceses. Facilitated by the Revd Dr William Olhausen, the study is based on ‘Land of Promise? An Anglican exploration of Christian attitudes to the Holy Land’, a document written to enable Anglicans across the Communion to engage more deeply with, and to become more informed about, the issues surrounding the situation in the Holy Land.
