Opening of Exhibition in Christ Church Cathedral
An exhibition marking the 130th Anniversary of the re-opening of Christ Church Cathedral after a major restoration in the 19th Century will take place on Saturday 20 September in the Cathedral Crypt at 6pm.
Professor Roger Stalley, Professor of the History of Art at Trinity College, Dublin who has written extensively on Christ Church Cathedral will perform the opening at a reception that will follow Evensong at 5pm.
The exhibition recalls the the extensive renovation of the Cathedral undertaken by George Edmund Street from 1871-1878, financed by Dublin Whiskey Distiller, Henry Roe who contributed £230,000 (nearly €30m today) to the work. The extensive renovation turned Christ Church Cathedral from being a near-ruin to the Cathedral as seen today.
The exhibition includes a remarkable drawings and photographs showing Street's work in progress and was made possible by a generous donation from the Heritage Council and a Corporate Donor. Assistance was also received from the Irish Language Body 'Colmcille'.
The exhibition is presently on view in the Cathedral and will remain until the end of the year. Viewing the exhibition is included in the entrance fee. Architectural Historian, Dr Michael O'Neill is the curator.
