The Revd Canon Ricky Rountree to be New Archdeacon of Glendalough

Tonight  (Wednesday 15 October 2008) at the Diocesan Synods of Dublin and Glendalough, the Archbishop of Dublin and Bishop of Glendalough, the Most Revd Dr John Neill announced he has appointed the Revd Canon Ricky Rountree, Rector of Powerscourt and Kilbride to be the new Archdeacon of Glendalough. He will succeed the Venerable Edgar Swann, who announced his intention to retire at the end of the year recently.

The Archbishop explained at the Synod that Canon Rountree will join the senior clergy meetings along with the Archdeacons of Dublin and Glendalough and the Dean of Christ Church Cathedral immediately, and will formally assume the office of Archdeacon of Glendalough on 1 January 2009, after Archdeacon Swann's retirement.

The announcement was met with delight and applause from the clergy and laity present at the Synods.

The Revd Canon Richard B (Ricky) Rountree was ordained a Deacon in 1976 and a priest in 1977. He has previously served as Curate in Orangefield in the Diocese of Down and Dromore from 1976-1980 and as Curate in Zion Church, Rathgar (Dublin) from 1980-1983. In 1983 he was appointed Rector of St Patrick's Church, Dalkey and in 1997 he was appointed Rector of Powerscourt and Kilbride, where he continues to serve today. He has been a Canon of Christ Church Cathedral since 1992 and presently serves as Canon Treasurer of the Cathedral. He also serves in other capacities including as a member of Diocesan Councils, the Parochial Development and Organisation Committee, on the Board of Christ Church Cathedral and as a member of General Synod and the Standing Committee of General Synod. He is a member of the Diocesan Board of Education and the Liturgical Advisory Committee. He is also the Diocesan Director of Lay Ministry.

Canon Rountree will be formally installed as Archdeacon of Glendalough on a date yet to be determined in the new year.
