Glaswegian to be New Rector of Greystones
It was announced today (Sunday 21 June 2009) that Revd David Mungavin, currently Rector of Troon in the Diocese of Glasgow and Galloway will be the new Rector of Greystones in the Diocese of Glendalough. He will succeed the Venerable Edgar Swann who retired at the end of December 2008.
The Revd David Stewart Mungavin was born in 1960 in Munster, Germany where his father (the Revd Canon Gerald Mungavin) was serving as Chaplain to the Royal Air Force. He was educated at Dollar Academy and the University of Stirling where he graduated with a BA in 1980 in Psychology and Sociology. He served as an inspector in the Royal Hong Kong Police (as it then was) and briefly in London before acceptance to study in the Edinburgh Theological College in 1987. He was ordained a Deacon in 1990 and a Priest in 1991 to serve in the Scottish Episcopal Church, a sister church of the Church of Ireland (as members of the Anglican Communion).
In 1990 he was appointed Curate in St Margaret's Church, Newlands, Glasgow and in 1992 he became Priest in Charge (later Rector) of Airdrie, Coatbridge and Gartcosh (also in the Diocese of Glasgow, to the east of the city). In 1999 he was appointed to his current incumbency as Rector of Troon.
Reflecting on his upcoming move to Ireland, the Revd David Mungavin said, " I am very much looking forward to serving in the Parish of St Patrick’s, Greystones and getting to know the people both in the community and congregation as well as the wider Dioceses and Church of Ireland in general. As we leave the familiar for the new there is also a sense of homecoming in our family !”
David is married to Pauline (née Smith) from Virginia, Co Cavan where she ran her own beauty/therapy salon before marriage and moving to Scotland.They have three children, James (7), Rachel (5) and Rebecca (4). In his spare time he enjoys travel,motor-biking, music, art (particularly antiques) and time with his family.
