Ordination of Four Deacons in Christ Church Cathedral

Today in Christ Church Cathedral the Archbishop of Dublin, the Most Revd Dr John Neill will ordained three men and one woman to the diaconate. One of the four being ordained, Ken Rue and his wife, Lesley also celebrated their 29th wedding anniversary having being married (also in Christ Church Cathedral) on 20 June 1981.  

The Revd Ken Rue will serve as a non-stipendary Curate-Assistant in Powerscourt with Kilbride (Enniskerry, Co Wicklow).

As well as Ken, the Revd Paul Arbuthnot was ordained to serve as Curate-Assistant in Glenageary Parish, the Revd Terry Lilburn to serve as a non-stipendary Curate-Assistant in Kilternan and the Revd Martha Waller to serve as a non-stipendary Curate-Assistant in Raheny and Coolock.

The Revd Paul Arbuthnot was born and brought up in Carrickfergus, Co Antrim. He became a chorister in St Anne's Cathedral in Belfast. In 1999 he came to Dublin to study and while living there he served in the Christ Church Cathedral and St Patrick's Cathedral Choirs. He graduated from Trinity College Dublin with a BA in History in 2003 and continued his studies graduating with an MA in 2006 and an MLitt in 2007. While studying in Trinity College he also worked part time in the National Concert Hall. In 2007 he entered full time study in the Church of Ireland Theological Institute. He married Emma last April. On his new appointment he said, "I am really looking forward to meeting people in Glenageary and journeying with them." In his spare time he enjoys cinema, theatre, football (he supports the Irish League team Crusaders) and reading.

The Revd Ken Rue was brought up in Crumlin, Dublin and studied in Wesley College and Trinity College, Dublin where he graduated with a Bachelor in Business Studies degree in 1975. He went on to qualify as an accountant in 1979. After many years in business including 16 years as Managing Director of Fodhla Printing, he took up his current employment, working as Financial Controller for two Apostolates of the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits). He works three days a week with Messenger Publications and one day a week with the Pioneers. Prior to his ordination, Ken served as a Lay Reader and as a result following the establishment of a partnership between his home parish of Whitechurch and Shyogwe Diocese in Rwanda, he was made a Canon of Shyogwe Cathedral in 2007. He is married to Lesley and the day of his ordination to the Diaconate they will also be celebrating their 29th wedding anniversary. They have one son, Richard, who is currently undertaking his Leaving Certificate. In his spare time Ken enjoys sports and current affairs. He said of his appointment that he was "looking forward to wherever God leads me in my ministry."

The Revd Terry Lilburn grew up in Rathfarnham. He was educated in Rathgar Junior School and Sandford Park School. He worked in the hotel business for many years including in the Shelbourne hotel and in several hotels in England. In 1975 he returned to Ireland and in 1977 went into the location catering business. In 1983 he opened Fothergills Delicatessen on the Upper Rathmines Road. Currently, he works as Administrative Assistant in the parish of Kilternan. In December 2003 he was made a Parish Reader and in February 2005, a Diocesan Lay Reader. Terry is married to Breda and they have three grown up children, Carol, Kristen and Sophie. He counts gardening, reading and classical music amongst his hobbies. He is an honorary patron of the Culwick Choral society. He particularly enjoys wine-tasting and has led classes and taught on the subject since 1991.

The Revd Martha Waller is from Milltown in Dublin. She was educated in Loreto Abbey in Gorey, Co Wexford and Mount St Anne's in Milltown before going on to complete a Commercial course in Alexandra College. She worked for many years in University College Dublin in many roles including in the Diagnostic labs in Earlsfort Terrace, the Computer Centre in Belfield and from 1989 to 2008 in the Bursar's Office. In 2008 she took early retirement. She is married to Derek and they have two children, Andrew (18) and Sylvia (13). She's been involved for many years in the Church including serving as a Lay Reader since 2006 and also through her involvement in the Diocesan Committee for the International Community (aka 'Discovery' committee) which is part of the Church's outreach to the 'new Irish'. She counts bell ringing and badminton amongst her hobbies and she's also involved in the Transplant games run by the Irish Kidney Association.

The address at the ordination was delivered by the Rector of Greystones, the Revd David Mungavin.
