OVERSEAS DEVELOPMENT MINISTER TO LAUNCH HIV/AIDS PHOTOGRAPHIC EXHIBITION
Mr. Peter Power, Minister of State for Overseas Development, will officially open a photographic exhibition entitled 'Living Positively with HIV/AIDS' in the Gallery Chapel, Trinity College Dublin on Tuesday 30 November (the Eve of World AIDS Day) at 7.00pm.
The exhibition, organised jointly by the Church of Ireland Chaplaincy at Trinity College Dublin and USPG Ireland, documents how USPG is working with the Anglican Church to support people living with HIV/AIDS in Odibo, Namibia. Through a collection of over 20 photographs the presentation looks at the Home Based Care Programme (HBCP), which was set up by the Anglican Church in Namibia – with funding from USPG – for people living with HIV in the village of Odibo.
Linda Chambers, Director of USPG Ireland said, “It is estimated that nearly 25 per cent of the population of Odibo is HIV-positive. Many of those who have died there were in their 20s or 30s. With USPG’s help HBCP is showing families how to care for someone living with HIV, while also offering practical help to households that are struggling with poverty. This photo exhibition is a great way to highlight this important work.”
Commenting on this initiative, the Revd Darren McCallig, Dean of Residence at Trinity College Dublin said, “We in TCD Chaplaincy are delighted to be working with USPG on this exhibition. With over 30 million people living with HIV worldwide and with the incidence of HIV increasing in every region of the world, the need for increased awareness and increased action has never been greater. Our hope and prayer is that the excellent work done by agencies such as USPG will continue to bring hope and healing to those most in need.”
The 'Living Positively with HIV/AIDS'
exhibition can be viewed in the Gallery Chapel, Front Square, TCD from 1 to 3 December between 1.00 and 5.00pm daily.
