New Conductor and Organ Scholar appointed at Trinity College Dublin Chapel
It has been announced that Ms. Margaret Bridge has been appointed as Conductor of Trinity College Dublin Chapel Choir for the 2011/2012 academic year. Mr. Kevin O’Sullivan has been appointed Organ Scholar to the College.
Margaret Bridge is from Bray in Co. Wicklow and is entering the final year of her music studies at TCD. She has been a member of the Chapel Choir for several years and a choral scholar for two years. In addition to being an accomplished singer and conductor, Margaret is also a talented pianist and flautist. She was elected to Scholarship in Music in April 2010.
Kevin O’Sullivan is from Stillorgan in Dublin and has just completed his studies for the B.Mus.Ed. degree in Trinity. Like Margaret he has been involved with Chapel Choir throughout his time in college and has held a choral scholarship for each of those four years. For the past three years he has been the organist of the Church of Saint Therese in Mount Merrion.
Dr Kerry Houston, Director of Chapel Music at TCD said, “Joining Chapel Choir is a very good way for new students to meet students from other disciplines. It is both an educational and aesthetic experience. Some previous choral experience is an advantage and some ability to read music is essential but any member of College is welcome to apply to sing in the Choir. Our big recruitment drive is, of course, during Freshers’ Week, but applications are welcome at any time of the year.”
The Dean of Residence at Trinity College Dublin, the Revd Darren McCallig commented, “Here in Trinity College we are the grateful heirs of a beautiful eighteenth century chapel, a distinguished musical heritage and a renowned choral tradition. I know that, under the leadership of Margaret and Kevin, Chapel Choir will continue to create magnificent music to enrich our liturgies and nourish our spirits.”
In addition to the regular choral services during each week of lecture term and various special college and university services, the Chapel Choir gives concerts and is broadcast regularly on both RTE and BBC. Trips within Britain and Ireland are organized twice yearly and more distant travels have included visits to New York, Venice, Rome, Berlin, Hong Kong and (in June of this year) Vienna.
