Christian Aid says Skip a Meal for Leap Year

Christian Aid is encouraging people to skip a meal tomorrow, Wednesday February 29, to raise money for children in Kenya. The organisation points out that for three years in a row, you don’t eat anything on February 29, so why not miss a meal on that day this year?

Sixteen–year–old Muli from Kenya is the eldest member of a child–headed household. He used to take the free school dinner then sneak home to share his meal with his two younger brothers and his sister who could not go to school. The most common food is that part of Kenya is maize porridge (Ugali) and beans.

Christian Aid, through its partner BIDII, provided a new house, school uniforms, clothes and helped secure the land for Muli and his brothers and sister.

People can support the Leap Year Fast by having a ‘fasting’ meal on February 29, for example soup and bread or maybe even a traditional Ugali (recipe from Christian Aid). They can make a donation for the fasting meal or get sponsorship for doing so.

The money raised will go to projects in Kenya similar to the one that was provided to Muli and his siblings. Money raised can be sent to Leap Year Fast, Christian Aid, 17 Clanwilliam Terrace, Dublin 2.

Further information can be had by emailing dublin@christian-aid.ie. Christian Aid also has Lent resources available at http://www.christianaid.ie/getinvolved/lent-2012/index.aspx
