Living Worship 2013 – A short course in music and worship
Church Music Dublin has organised Living Worship 2013 – a short course in music and worship to run over two Saturday mornings in January. The course will run on Saturday January 12 and Saturday January 19 from 10.00 am to 12.30 pm in Mageough Hall, Cowper Road, Rathmines (beside the Cowper Luas stop).
The annual Living Worship course aims to demonstrate the meaningful use of music in worship, by helping musicians to see their role as being wider than just playing an instrument or singing in a choir. Now in its eighth year, Living Worship has something to offer everyone who has an interest or involvement in the music of worship – musicians, singers, those with pastoral responsibility (not only clergy) and those who sit in the pews, Sunday by Sunday.
There are just two sessions this year and Church Music Dublin believes that participants will enjoy them, will find them stimulating and meet an interesting group of people.
On Saturday January 12 the Revd Dr Stanley Monkhouse, rector of the Portlaoise group of parishes, is a priest–musician and a former lecturer at medical school. His wide exerience makes him well–placed to review the role of the church musician. Dr Monkhouse’s talk will be constructive, informative, amusing and at times, perhaps, a little irreverent.
On Saturday January 19 the Revd Dr Peter Thompson, rector of the Donaghmore group of parishes, Succentor at St Patrick’s Cathedral, Armagh, and Secretary to the Hymnal Committee, will talk about the contents of the forthcoming supplement to Church Hymnal and how the Committee has gone about its work. He then will give some practical advice as to how how clergy and musicians should approach the task of selecting music for Church of Ireland services.
