Services and Events Announced for Week of Prayer for Christian Unity
The Week of Prayer for Christian Unity takes place from January 18 to 25. Ecumenical events and services have been arranged throughout the United Dioceses to mark the week.
The inaugural service takes place in St George’s and St Thomas’s Church on Cathal Brugha Street, Dublin 1, on Friday January 18 starting at 8.00 pm. This service will be attended by Church leaders from many Christian denominations. The speaker will be the Roman Catholic Revd Professor Frederick Bliss, Professor for Ecumenical Theology (Rome).
Throughout the week members of different worship communities will be coming together in fellowship. The Roman Catholic Archbishop of Dublin, the Most Revd Dr Diarmuid Martin, will preach in St Saviour’s Church of Ireland Church in Arklow on Sunday January 20 at 3.00 pm. Meanwhile, the chairperson of the Irish Council of Churches, Fr Godfrey O’Donnell of the Romanian Orthodox Church, will speak at an ecumenical service in the Church of the Assumption in Dalkey on Thursday January 24 at 7.30 pm.
On Friday January 25 an interchurch service in Irish will take place in Christ Church Cathedral organised by the Church of Ireland’s Cumann Gaelach na hEaglaise and its Roman Catholic counterpart Pobal an Aifrinn. The Revd Elaine Dunne will preach and there will be a reception afterwards in the Crypt.
