Busy St Patrick’s Festival Planned for Christ Church Cathedral

A packed programme of events is planned for Christ Church Cathedral this Saint Patrick’s Weekend with some fantastic activities in the Crypt and outside on the Cathedral grounds to entertain the young and the young at heart.

To celebrate the feast of our Patron Saint, Christ Church Cathedral will play host to a number of family events including traditional music, face–painting and Céilís in the crypt while in the Cathedral there will be a variety of tours and storytelling for all ages that will be sure to capture the imagination of all. Outside on the Cathedral grounds we will be joined again by The Irish Village Food Market with stalls offering a wide variety of homemade and gourmet foods.

St Patrick’s Day Festival Eucharist

Christ Church Cathedral will celebrate a Festival Eucharist at 10.00 am on the Feast of St Patrick sung by the choirs of Christ Church Cathedral, Dublin and St Peter’s Cathedral, Belfast together with the Christ Church Brass ensemble. This ecumenical cross–border celebration of community in Ireland aims to create a strong sense of unity for everyone on the island.

Belfry Tours

Date: Saturday 16th and Sunday 17th and Monday 18th of March

Time: 12:30, 13:30 and 14:30

Price: €4 + admission (must be booked in advance)

Take a tour of the famous bell tower with the Ringing Master and gain a rare insight into the fascinating and ancient art of campanology (bell ringing) and its place in the cultural history of Dublin. Here is a story from Lesley Taylor who will be giving the tour on the Storymap Blog.

Telling Tall Tales – Characters of Christ Church

Date: Saturday 16th and Sunday 17th and Monday 18th of March

Time: 13:00 and 14:30 and 15.30

Price: €2 + admission (must be booked in advance)

Join us over the weekend for energetic and unconventional stories about some of Dublin’s most ghastly, unpleasant yet most interesting characters from Christ Church’s history and its surrounds. Presented by the fantastically entertaining Donal Fallon of ‘Come Here to Me’ Blog. 

Céilí in the Crypt

Date: Saturday 16th and Sunday 17th and Monday 18th of March

Time: 13:00–17:00

Price: Free + admission (must be booked in advance)

This year we are delighted to host Cairde Rince Céilí na hÉireann for our first ever ‘Céilí in the Crypt’, featuring a host of different jigs and reels. You don’t have to be Jean Butler or Michael Flatley to be part of this wonderful celebration of traditional Irish dancing in the oldest venue in Dublin. We will have expert dancers and musicians on hand who will guide you along the way. Learn the steps, enjoy live traditional music or just relax in our Crypt Café and soak up the atmosphere of the 12th Century surrounds right in the heart of Dublin City Centre.

The Tudors Exhibition

Date: Saturday 16th and Sunday 17th and Monday 18th of March

Time: 09:30–17:00

Price: Free + admission

A spectacular exhibition of original costumes from the historical series, The Tudors. Designed by Emmy award–winning designer Joan Bergin, the opulent costumes from the drama have traveled the world having previously appeared on display in Macy’s New York on Saint Patrick’s Day. The beautiful gowns feature elaborate beading, embroidery, crotchet and hand painting.

Book of Common Prayer Exhibition

Date: Saturday 16th and Sunday 17th and Monday 18th of March

Time: 09:30–17:00

Price: Free + admission

An exhibition marking the 350th anniversary of the 1662 Book of Common Prayer is currently on display in the Crypt. Compiled by Canon Roy Byrne, the exhibition celebrates the great heritage of liturgical reform and development and draws together a wide variety of editions of the Book of Common Prayer to illustrate its 350th anniversary journey. Entitled “The Word That Spake It”, the exhibition will be on display in the Cathedral Treasury. 

St Patrick’s Festival Food Market at Christ Church

Date: Saturday 16th and Sunday 17th and Monday 18th of March

Time: 10:00–17:00 (Saturday and Monday) 12:00–17:00 (Sunday)

The Irish Village Markets return again this year with an impressive array of homemade and gourmet food on the Grounds of Christ Church Cathedral. Featuring stalls from Pixi Boo, Grub Hub, Kerala Kitchen, Say Fish, Little Crepe Company, Kanum Thai, Hanley’s Cornish Pasties, The Schnitzel Hut, Good Brazilian Food Company, this popular market will make sure no one goes hungry this Patrick’s Weekend.

Craft ‘Pop–Up’ Shop at the Crypt Shop
