Newcastle Victorious in Annual Diocesan Hockey Tournament

Perfect weather conditions prevailed as some of the top athletes in the Dioceses of Dublin and Glendalough took to the pitch for the annual Diocesan Inter Parish Hockey Tournament. This year five teams took part in the hotly contested event which took place in St Andrew’s College, Dublin, on Sunday June 9.

Newcastle and Newtownmountkennedy with Calary emerged victorious after a full afternoon of competition in which they won all four of their matches. The other teams vying for the coveted trophy were Wicklow and Killiskey, Dalkey, Booterstown and Carysfort with Mount Merrion and Rathfarnham. Rathfarnham had the honour of taking home the wooden spoon prize of the Archbishop’s Chamber Pot.

The event was organised once again by the Revd Gillian Wharton and the Revd Anne Taylor. The recently instituted rector of Dalkey, the Revd Bruce Hayes, joined his parish’s team in their bid to defend the title they won last year. Meanwhile, the Revd Rob Clements found himself in a conflicted situation as a deacon in Rathfarnham but a parishioner in Booterstown.

Following the tournament, the Revd Gillian Wharton thanked all the parishes who had got teams out. She thanked David Acheson for umpiring many of the matches and all the others who took on the role of referee throughout the afternoon.

On behalf of the players, Garth Collier from the winning Newcastle team, thanked the organisers for putting on such a fantastic and enjoyable tournament.

Each team played four matches. As the hooter was sounded for the final time the results of the tournament were as follows: Newcastle won four, Wicklow won two, Dalkey won one and drew one, Booterstown won one and drew one and Rathfarnham won one.
