Dublin Faith Leaders Walk for Peace
Dublin City Interfaith Forum (DCIF) marked the United Nations International Day of Peace with a colourful Interfaith Walk of Peace through the city streets today (Sunday September 15).
Leaders of various religious communities, including the Archbishop of Dublin, Dr Michael Jackson, joined members of the Dublin City Interfaith Forum and others for the event. The walk concluded at the Mansion House where the Deputy Lord Mayor of Dublin met them.
The International Day of Peace was established by a United Nations resolution in 1981. In 2002 the General Assembly officially declared September 21 as the permanent date for the International Day of Peace. DCIF holds its Walk of Peace on the Sunday prior to September 21.
The Dublin City Interfaith Forum whose members include Baha’I, Buddhist, Christian, Hindu, Jewish, Muslim and Sikh communities, works to educate and encourage people of different faiths to dialogue and work together in matters of policy, strategy and action and challenge all forms of injustice and discrimination.
Ms. Sinead Lynch, chair of the DCIF said: “Today’s Walk of Peace is a powerful sign of unity in diversity. Although we come from many different religious and cultural backgrounds we are united in our desire for peace: peace in our local communities, peace in our country and peace throughout the world. This year we are particularly mindful of the humanitarian crisis in Syria and this United Nations Day of Peace is an opportunity for us all to pause, reflect and consider how to build a more just, inclusive and peaceful world.”
