Swimmers Take to the High Seas for St Paul’s Dalkey Swim
The Annual St Paul’s Dalkey Island Swim in aid of Kisiizi Hospital in Uganda took place on Sunday September 8. A total of 28 swimmers took to the water in reasonable conditions although participants had to contend with a very strong current caused by the turning tide.
One of the swimmers this year was Tara Doyne, daughter of the late Frank Doyne who came up with the idea in the first place in 1995.
This year it is estimated that the swim will raise €3,000 for Kisiizi Hospital. This money will be used to help pay the salary of a surgeon at the hospital. Due to its remote location, the hospital faces a constant challenge to retain suitably qualified staff.
St Paul’s Parish in Glenageary has been supporting Kisiizi Hospital and previously raised €200,000 to build four new operating theatres at the hospital and to fund the training of a Ugandan surgeon.
The parishioners are very grateful to the swimmers, their sponsors and to those who provided and crewed the safety boats, with special thanks going to Peter Craven who coordinated the event.
