CMS Ireland launches South Sudan Emergency Appeal
CMS Ireland has responded to the ongoing crisis in South Sudan and to the requests of its Global Partners there by launching an emergency appeal. The appeal calls for prayer support and financial assistance as the Church in South Sudan – and in neighbouring countries – seeks to care for those who have fled their homes in fear for their lives.
Those who have been displaced are desperately seeking places of refuge and this often means that they come to the churches. Along with Connor Diocese, Down and Dromore Dioceses and many parishes throughout Ireland, CMS Ireland works in partnership with four dioceses in South Sudan. This appeal has been launched in response to the requests from these Global Partners. They ask the Church of Ireland to pray and, where possible, to offer financial assistance as they provide shelter, water, food, blankets and cooking utensils and as they try to offer hope in the midst of deep despair.
Earlier this week, Bishop of Connor, the Rt Rev Alan Abernethy, wrote to parishes in his diocese, urging them to support the CMS Ireland appeal. Bishop Alan and a team from Connor were due to travel to Yei today to lead youth and clergy conferences, meet MU representatives and run health training. The trip was postponed last week due to the ongoing unrest. A planned visit by a team from the Dioceses of Down and Dromore to their partners in Maridi Diocese has also been postponed.
In his letter, Bishop Alan writes:
“Please help us to help the church in South Sudan make life bearable for the men, women and children who have once again had to flee their homes due to fighting which began as a political crisis and has quickly changed into tribal warfare between South Sudan’s largest tribes, the Dinka and the Nuer.
“CMSI is in daily contact with its Global Partners in South Sudan and can send the money directly to where it is most needed. With its local knowledge and accountability CMSI is well placed to do this.”
Further information on the appeal – including prayer requests, options for sending money and details on how the funds will be used – is available on CMS Ireland’s website (www.cmsireland.org) or by contacting their offices. Funds can also be channeled to the CMS Ireland appeal through the Church of Ireland Bishops’ Appeal.
