Revd John Marchant Appointed Bishop’s Curate of Donnybrook and Irishtown
The Revd John Marchant (pictured) has been appointed as Bishop’s Curate of the Donnybrook and Irishtown group of parishes. He has been serving the parishes as priest–in–charge since late 2013.
After studying in the Church of Ireland Theological College, John was ordained non–stipendiary deacon in 2006 in Dublin & Glendalough and priested in 2007. He served his curacy in Powerscourt with Kilbride in Glendalough.
Following retirement from an IT company in 2007, John was employed as the first full–time Church of Ireland chaplain to Dublin City University from 2007 to 2011. He also studied part–time for a Masters degree in Biblical Studies in Milltown Institute, NUI, which was awarded in 2010.
From March 2010 until April 2011 John took charge of Zion Parish, Rathgar, due to the illness and subsequent death of the rector, the Revd Wilbert Gourley. This experience prompted him to seek to transfer to the stipendiary ministry. Sponsored by Archbishop Michael Jackson, he completed this study in May 2012. During this period, he led worship in more than 20 churches in the dioceses.
Following the tragic death of the Revd Derek Sargent in July 2012, John served as priest–in–charge of Clontarf parish until September 2013, after which he was made priest–in–charge of the Donnybrook and Irishtown Parish Group. The Archbishop appointed him as Bishop’s Curate of the Donnybrook and Irishtown Group in June 2014.
