Temple Carrig School Community Prepares for New Year and New Building

The students and staff of Temple Carrig School in Greystones gathered to dedicate the new academic year at a special service in Christ Church, Delgany, yesterday (Sunday August 30). There was a double celebration as the principal, Alan Cox, received the keys of the brand new school building just minutes before the start of the service and less than 48 hours before start of the new school year on Tuesday.

The new secondary school, which caters for students from the Greystones and Delgany area and is under Church of Ireland patronage, opened last year in temporary accommodation. This year marks another new beginning as the students will be the first to occupy the state of the art building.

The service was introduced by the Rector of Delgany, the Revd Nigel Waugh and Mr Cox welcomed the students, their parents and the staff. The service was led by the Revd Alan Breen, curate in St Patrick’s Church, Greystones and chaplain to the school, who said he was looking forward to getting to know the students.

Addressing the students, Archbishop Michael Jackson said they would be the first to moving into the new school building which had been designed and built for generations of Temple Carrig pupils to come.

He spoke about the importance of learning and teaching a posed three questions which he said came through to us from the time of Jesus to the present day: What do you think? When will you act? Where will you go?

The Archbishop asked the students if they had gathered all the information needed to inform their decisions on what they think and what they will do with the information they receive. “None of us quite knows where we will go in the future, what we will do and what we will make happen. When I put it like this, it may sound uninteresting or even frightening. It is not meant to. The right thing will happen – maybe not the first time, but it will be the right thing. And you will know that it is right for you. Then you must go with it,” he said.
