Time to Bully Off for the 21st Diocesan Inter Parish Hockey Tournament
The 21st Dublin and Glendalough Inter Parish Hockey Tournament takes place in St Andrew’s College, Booterstown, on Sunday October 4 starting at 2.30 pm (or as soon as you can make it there without missing church!).
As per last year, it will be a 7–a–side tournament. The fee for playing in the tournament (to cover costs) is €30 per team, which must be submitted with the form on or before Friday September 25.
As always teams of fit and able–bodied men and women from all over the dioceses are very welcome although organisers are keen to stress that fitness and ability are not requirements for this tournament, just a sense of humour and courage.
This is very much a FUN tournament. Hence there are some rules and regulations, which they endeavour to enforce to the utmost, in order to keep the FUN aspect of the tournament as the focus. Parishes are urged to ensure that their teams consists of ‘legal’ players and that they play in a friendly and sporting manner.
It is a seven–a–side, and at any time on the pitch, each team must consist of either four men and three ladies or three men and four ladies. They also ask that the members of each wear the same colour shirt to assist the umpires.
Only one member of each team may be under eighteen years of age and may not be of interprovincial standard or higher.
Each team must have a goalkeeper i.e. someone who is wearing a helmet, a chestpad and other goalkeeping protection.
The event is organised by the Revd Gillian Wharton who is looking for assistance to ensure that the tournament can continue. “This is the 21st year of the Diocesan Inter–Parish Hockey Tournament. Since the tournament started in 1995, it has been organised by the Revd Anne Taylor and I. Last year, I said that I was finishing up as the organiser of the tournament, but no one jumped up and down with enthusiasm to take it over; please consider offering to help… maybe if two or three people took it on… it would be a pity if it ceased to happen,” she says.
The Rectors of each parish in Dublin and Glendalough has been sent entry forms and a copy of the rules. Anyone wishing to put a parish team together should contact them.
