MU Prayer Vigil in Solidarity With Those Experiencing Gender Based Violence
The Mothers’ Union is calling on women all over Ireland to stand together in prayer and in person tomorrow (Saturday November 28) in an All–Ireland Prayer Vigil, organised as a gesture of solidarity with women in Ireland and across the world who experience gender–based violence. With gatherings in all twelve dioceses of the Church of Ireland, Mothers’ Union hopes this simple act of solidarity will help raise awareness among the general population and encourage governments to take action to end gender–based violence. The ‘16 Days’ campaign is based on the period between November 25 (International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women) and December 10 (Human Rights Day).
In Dublin the vigil will take place in Christ Church Cathedral from 3.00 pm to 6.00 pm. The vigil will commence outside the cathedral at a brazier which will be used to light the paschal candle. The candle will be brought into the cathedral and smaller candles will be lit from it during the service. The first part of the vigil will take place in the cathedral’s crypt before moving up to the nave.
There will be six speakers:
3.40 pm – Joan O’Reilly of Rathmines Women’s Refuge
4.00 pm – Deputy Regina Doherty
4.10 pm – Tara Brown of Ruhama
4.45 pm – Lydia Monds of Bishops’ Appeal
5.00 pm – Roisin Gallagher of Christian Aid
6.00 pm – Jessica Clarke, Mothers’ Union Overseas Contact
The worship will be led by the Revd Abigail Sines, Canon Paul Houston and Canon Adrienne Galligan. Harpist and former MU diocesan president, Ann Walsh, will provide musical interludes.
