Dublin & Glendalough 800 – Come & Sing and Laurencetide Celebrations
Members of parish choirs from all over Dublin and Glendalough are being invited to join Christ Church Cathedral Choir at a special Diocesan Come & Sing next month. The service takes place on Sunday November 20 at 3.30 pm in Christ Church Cathedral and forms part of the cathedral’s Diocesan Music Outreach Project in collaboration with the Dublin & Glendalough 800 celebrations.
This will be the latest of a number of Come & Sing events which have been very well received by choir members who have enjoyed the experience of singing with the cathedral choir in the magnificent surroundings of Christ Church Cathedral. They also help to build strong and positive relationships between the cathedral and the parish churches of the dioceses.
Organist and Director of Music at Christ Church Cathedral, Ian Keatley, thanked all who had taken part in previous Come & Sing events and encouraged parish choirs to join this special anniversary event. “As we reflect on 800 years of witness and worship in Dublin & Glendalough, I warmly invite you to join us this November as we celebrate the ministry of music in the past, the present, and in years to come,” he said.
To register as a participating singer on 20 November, please contact Caroline Richards (Organ Scholar, Christ Church Cathedral) caroline@christchurch.ie / 01 677 8099. Please confirm your attendance by Tuesday 8 November. Rehearsal copies will be made available to participating singers. Rehearsal will take place in the cathedral nave at 2.00 pm on November 20.
Dublin & Glendalough 800 – Laurencetide Celebrations
The Diocesan Come & Sing service on Sunday November 20 falls within the Octave of St Laurence O’Toole providing a focal point for the celebrations marking the 800th anniversary of the confirmation of Dublin and Glendalough as United Dioceses.
Laurencetide celebrations begin on Sunday November 13 with an ecumenical service on the Eve of the Feast of St Laurence O’Toole. The service will be sung by the combined choirs of Christ Church Cathedral and St Mary’s Pro–Cathedral as a symbol of a shared desire for Christian unity. An address will be given by The Most Revd Diarmuid Martin, Catholic Archbishop of Dublin and Primate of Ireland.
Ian Keatley has confirmed that, to mark the 800th anniversary, a new hymn text (translated and versified by Canon Dr John Bartlett) and a newly commissioned anthem (for Christ Church Cathedral Choir) by David Bednall (www.davidbednall.com) will be premiered at this service. Ian thanked Dr Stuart Kinsella and Dr Frank Lawrence who have produced a wealth of material for the new commissions marking the 800th anniversary.
