Bishops of Spain and Lusitania Learn of Camino of Glendalough
The Bishops of Spain and Lusitania were in Hollywood, County Wicklow, today (Wednesday October 12) to learn about the new ‘Camino de Glendalough’. The camino is being officially launched on Sunday November 6 and will follow St Kevin’s Way from St Kevin’s Church in Hollywood to Glendalough.
The Camino de Glendalough is an initiative which arose from the Come&C project but is also linked to the celebration of the 800th anniversary of Dublin and Glendalough as united dioceses.
Kevin’s Way begins at either Hollywood or Valleymount and follows the King’s River valley before climbing the Wicklow Gap and descending through Glendassan to Glendalough.
On November 6, the modern day pilgrims can start in St Kevin’s Church in Hollywood or in St John’s Church in Laragh at 9.30 am. They can choose to undertake the camino along the full 30 kilometres of St Kevin’s Way or a number of shorter walks. The day will finish with a gathering at the Upper Lake in Glendalough at 3.30 pm.
People are welcome to take in as much or as little of the programme as they like and St John’s Church will be a hub for various activities throughout the day. (More details will be available in the coming days).
The Anglican Bishop of Spain, the Rt Revd Carlos López–Lozano and the Anglican Bishop of Lusitania (Portugal), the Right Revd José Jorge de Pina Cabral, are in Dublin and Glendalough as part of the dioceses’ 800th celebrations. The dioceses, through Archbishop Plunket and Archbishop Gregg, were instrumental in establishing the Anglican Churches in both Spain and Portugal.
The bishops visited St Kevin’s Church this morning connecting their interest in the Camino Santiago de Compostela with the new Camino de Glendalough. The Revd Leonard Ruddock, Rector of Blessington and the Revd Brian O’Reilly, Rector of Rathdrum, outlined the camino route and gave a brief history of Glendalough and St Kevin.
