The Revd Kevin Brew Appointed to the Chapter of Christ Church Cathedral
The Revd Kevin Brew is to become a Canon of Christ Church Cathedral. Kevin (pictured) is Rector of St Mary’s Parish in Howth and has been appointed to the cathedral Chapter following the resignation of Canon Patrick Comerford who took up a post in the Dioceses of Limerick and Killaloe in January. He becomes the 12th Canon.
Announcing the appointment, Archbishop Michael Jackson said: “I am delighted that the Revd Kevin Brew has accepted the invitation to be a Canon of Christ Church Cathedral. Kevin has served throughout the Church of Ireland in pastoral and parochial ministry. He is well–known throughout Dublin and Glendalough. I have every confidence that he will contribute to the life and the development of the cathedral and trust that he will be welcomed into the body of the Chapter”.
Dean Dermot Dunne, Dean of Christ Church Cathedral added: “I am very happy that the Revd Kevin Brew has been appointed by the Archbishop to the cathedral Chapter. I wish to congratulate Kevin on his preferment and I look forward to welcoming him to the cathedral family. I realise that Kevin will bring a depth of experience and knowledge to his role and the cathedral can only but benefit by this. May I wish him a long tenure and every blessing in his new role”.
Kevin said he was honoured at his appointment. “I was delighted to accept the Archbishop’s appointment to the Chapter of Christ Church Cathedral. Christ Church is the cathedral where I was ordained by Archbishop Henry McAdoo in 1978 and I am honoured to become a member of the Chapter,” he stated.
Kevin was ordained to service in Raheny & Coolock as curate assistant to the Revd Cecil Wilson. He was appointed Bishop’s Curate in the Parish of Finglas and Chaplain to the Rotunda Hospital in 1980. He subsequently served as Rector in the Mountmellick Group of Parishes in Kildare Diocese from 1983 until 1989, when he was appointed Rector of Ahoghill & Portglenone in the Diocese of Connor where he remained until 2005. He then returned to Dublin and Glendalough having been appointed Rector of Howth.
“It has been a privilege to work in so many different situations, in each of which the witness of the local Church of Ireland community makes its own particular contribution. I have fond memories of Bishop Samuel Poyntz. During his time in St Ann’s, I was a Student Reader and he was my Bishop when I first went to Connor,” he commented.
A native of Birmingham, Kevin came to Trinity in 1968 to study Physics and initially worked as a medical physicist in the Vascular Medicine Unit in St Mary’s Hospital. He married Rachel McIlroy (herself a daughter of the Manse) in July 1975 before entering the Divinity Hostel. They have two children, Anthony and Benjamin and four grandchildren, Ryan, Ruairi, Liam and Isaac.
