INTERDENOMINATIONAL SERVICE IN IRISH IN CHRIST CHURCH CATHEDRAL
An Interdenominational Service in the Irish language will be held in Christ Church Cathedral, Dublin, on Friday, 19 January 2018 at 8pm, organised by Cumann Gaelach na hEaglaise and Pobal an Aifrinn.
There will be a short address after the service to remember the late Bishop Donald Caird. Aonghus Dwane, author of Donald Caird, Church of Ireland Bishop, Gaelic Churchman, A Life will give the lecture.
This service, a tradition for 47 years, will be celebrated during the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity, with hymns, prayers and readings. Hymns will be sung by the choir of Gaelscoil na Cille, Co. Meath. A consort of Christ Church Cathedral choir will sing canticles and an anthem.
Clergy from various churches will be present, and Fr.Leon Ó Giolláin SJ will preach this year. The Lord Mayor of Dublin, Micheál Mac Donnacha will also attend.
Trevor Sargent, Chair of Cumann Gaelach na hEaglaise, speaking about this service said, “We are delighted that our first event in Bliain na Gaeilge 2018 is our Interdenominational Service. This service began in 1971, in response to the Troubles, but, Thanks be to God, those days are behind us now, due to the sterling efforts of great people, not least Bishop Donald Caird. The Irish saying, ‘ní neart go cur le chéile’, means ‘there is no strength without unity’, and we still face challenges; social, ecological and Brexit. To this I say, ‘ní neart go guí le chéile’ chomh maith’, ‘there is no strength without prayer’. Let us praise the Son of God, with the theme for the service, That We All May Be Free”.
Bláthnaid Ó Brádaigh, Administrator, Pobal an Aifrinn said, “Through the influence of the inter–denominational service in Irish, organised annually by Pobal an Aifrinn and Cumann Gaelach na hEaglaise, and the friendships and bonds generated by this co–operation for the past 47 years, it is our wish that the knowledge and awareness of our shared Celtic heritage and religion will continue to grow and expand, and thus enrich our lives in God’s presence.”
Refreshments will be available in the medieval cathedral crypt after the service.
