Being a Christian in the Holy Land – What we can learn and how we can develop links
Clergy and lay people in Dublin & Glendalough are invited to come and hear of life and witness for Christians in the Diocese of Jerusalem and learn how we can build links between our dioceses. Canon Hatem Shehadeh from Haifa is returning to our dioceses next week and there will be an opportunity to meet and talk to him on Wednesday May 23 in the Church of Ireland Theological Institute. You can also join him at a number of public events.
Canon Hatem will meet clergy for conversation on Wednesday afternoon from 3.30pm to 5pm, following tea/coffee at 3pm. Topics up for discussion will include education, in particular Canon Hatem’s award winning peace initiative and its implications for Christian education both in Jerusalem and in Ireland.
He will also talk about a Christian identity which is stripped of national and cultural power – Christian identity under occupation. As Christians are now a tiny minority in the Land of the Holy One, he will also share about Christian witness and mission as a minority faith community.
There will be an opportunity to reflect on and explore how our parishes, schools and other organisations can develop links with their counterparts in the Diocese of Jerusalem.
The Archbishop will preside at Holy Communion at 5pm to which clergy and lay participants are invited. All are welcome to have dinner at 6pm which is free.
Later on Wednesday, from 7.30pm to 9pm, there will be an evening with Canon Hatem for lay people during which he will talk of his own story and experiences followed by questions and discussion.
The visit is part of our partnership link with the Diocese of Jerusalem which, among other things, aims to enable the people of each diocese learn more about each other. It is organised by the Dublin & Glendalough Council for Mission.
