Cathedral Choir Helps Mark Sea Sunday in Monkstown Parish Church
The Choir of Christ Church Cathedral sang Diocesan Choral Evensong in Monkstown Parish Church yesterday (Sunday June 10). The service was part of the cathedral’s Diocesan Music Outreach Project and took place as the parish marked Sea Sunday. Throughout the service there were references to the sea, concluding with the organ voluntary – an improvisation on ‘A Sea Shanty’ by David Bremner, assistant organist at the cathedral.
The church, which is known for its acoustics, was filled with the voices of the choir, under the direction of the cathedral’s Organist and Director of Music, Ian Keatley, as parishioners and visitors alike enjoyed the rich musical experience.
The Diocesan Music Outreach Project seeks to build strong and positive relationships with the parish churches of the dioceses. Recently the cathedral choir has visited Kilbride Church near Bray, St Maelruain’s Church in Tallaght, the Church of St John the Baptist in Drumcondra, St Mary’s Howth and St Mary’s Blessington to support their worship.
The cathedral’s music department seeks to meet the actual needs of parish church musicians in the dioceses and runs a series of training workshops. The cathedral’s series of music summer schools welcome children from local schools into the cathedral community culminating in a joint service with the cathedral choir.
The cathedral voluntary choir is another part of its music outreach programme and seeks to further develop voluntary music making within the cathedral community while also drawing people of other faiths into the cathedral.
