Marking Armistice 100 in Dublin & Glendalough
The centenary of the Armistice will be commemorated throughout the United Dioceses over the coming week. This Sunday, November 11, marks the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I.
St Patrick’s Cathedral, Dublin (the National Cathedral)
The Fallen, a temporary installation marking the end of World War I continues in St Patrick’s Cathedral until December 1. You can visit the installation during normal opening hours and for normal admission costs.
On Saturday November 10 at 7pm there will be a Remembrance Concert with the RTE Concert Orchestra (Tickets €20 (€17 concessions; available from www.stpatrickscathedral.ie) conducted by David Leigh. In addition to Brahms’ German Requiem, the concert features a rare performance of For the Fallen by Edward Elgar, composed only a year after the end of WW1, which sets the Binyon poem “They shall not grow old as we that are left grow old”. The orchestral work In memoriam by Arnold Bax, composed in 1916, completes the programme, which also features soprano Rachael Croash and basses Eoghan Desmond and Jeffrey Ledwridge.
On Sunday November 11 at 3.15pm the annual Remembrance Sunday Service takes place. All are welcome. The preacher will be the Dean of Armagh, the Very Revd Gregory Dunstan.
Christ Church Cathedral
Christ Church Cathedral is holding ‘A Night of Soul: Songs for Peace and Hope’ on Sunday November 11 at 8pm. Discovery Gospel Choir and Dublin Gospel Choir will unite to raise their voices in a spirit of peace and hope. There will be a moment of silent reflection in
memory of all who have died in war. This concert is in aid of the Irish Refugee Council’s ‘A Place to Call Home’ project and Trócaire. Admission is free and generous donations are encouraged.
Christ Church, Bray
Each November Christ Church Bray remembers those with connections to Bray who died in both World Wars. In this Armistice Centenary year they also hope to include stories of those people who returned from the Great War and what course their lives took afterwards. Did they settle in Bray and what did they do next? These stories make up the very fabric of Bray, Greystones, Enniskerry and they are stories which should be recalled and told at this centenary. The Come & Remember exhibition will run each day in Christ Church, Bray, from Tuesday November 6 to Sunday November 11. People can view the exhibition from 10am to 1pm and 5pm to 8pm from Tuesday to Friday and on Saturday and Sunday from 2pm to 5pm.
On Sunday there will be a performance of the Mass for Peace, ‘The Armed Man’ by Karl Jenkins. Singers from far and wide are invited to join the performance. Registration will be at 1pm with rehearsals taking place between 1.30pm and 6pm and the performance at 7pm. Audience welcome from 2pm. The chorus master and conductor for the day is Fran Kelly, musical director of Bray and Wicklow Choral Societies.
Morning Prayer will take place on Sunday November 11 and will include an Act of Remembrance with a muffled peal of bells and an introduction by a local historian on how Bray celebrated the Armistice.
St Catherine and St James with St Audoen
On Sunday November 11 Archbishop Michael Jackson will join the Rector for a 10am Eucharist at St Audoen’s Cornmarket. Family Service will follow at 11.30am in the Church of St Catherine & St James, Donore Avenue, when the Archbishop will dedicate a new memorial to members of the Carroll family of St Peter’s, Aungier Street, who served in the two World Wars. Fr Alois Greiler (from Germany) of St Teresa’s, Donore Avenue, will speak on the centenary of the Armistice. This short service will be followed by tea and coffee.
St Patrick’s, Dalkey
There will be an act of remembrance in St Patrick’s Church, Dalkey, during the 10.15am service on November 11.
St Laurence’s Chapelizod
The 100th anniversary of the Armistice will be marked on November 11 at 7.30pm in St Laurence’s, Chapelizod with Sung Compline by Chapelizod Community Choir.
St Michael’s, Athy
St Michael’s Cemetery in Athy will be the location for a Commemoration Service on Sunday November 11 at 3pm.

On November 11 at 10.45am there will be an ecumenical service at the World War I memorial in the grounds of All Saints; Church (weather permitting). On this occasion parishioners will be joined by the new Parish Priest and parishioners from the nearby St Peter’s Church, Phibsborough. This will consist of two hymns, two readings and prayers with an Act of Remembrance at 11am when the bells of both churches will be rung. Fr Joseph Loftus will then bring a lantern from All Saints to St Peters for their 11.30am mass. St Paul’s, Glenageary St Paul’s Remembrance service at 10.30am on Sunday November 11 will also mark exactly 100 years since the First World War ended at the “eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month” of 1918. There will be an Act of Remembrance for all those who died, calling to mind particularly the 17 young men from St Paul’s who left Glenageary for the battle fields during 1914–18 and never came home. They were: A. Acton, R.H.M. Bury, F. Carter, H. Dudley, J. Douglas, E.G. Coldwell, E. Harpur, J.D. Niven, W. O’Conor, L. Orr, W. Phelan, T.E. Talbot, F.W. Rickets, E. Robinson, C.G. Sherlock, A.E. Stokes and A.E. Strong. St Ann’s, Dawson Street
The clergy and choir form St Ann’s Church, Dawson Street, will join with the University Church at ‘The Haunting Soldier’ in St Stephen’s Green on Sunday November 11 for a short Act of Remembrance at 10.30am. Narraghmore, Timolin, Castledermot and Kinneagh Patrick Ryall is giving a talk about Remembrance Sunday in Timolin Church on Sunday November 11 at 11.30am.
