Light in the Darkness – Advent Procession in Christ Church Cathedral
Light shone out in the darkness at Christ Church Cathedral’s Advent Procession yesterday (December 1) marking the start of the new church year and the beginning of a time of anticipation as we look towards Christmas Day. The dramatic candle lit service, which takes place on the first Sunday of Advent each year, offers an invitation to pause and reflect while being enfolded by seasonal music sung by the Cathedral Choir.
The service highlighted the unique position of the First Sunday of Advent, precisely at the turning point of the liturgical year which turns a spotlight on the paradox that is characteristic of the Christian faith. The service sheet put it further: “Perhaps the greatest paradox of Advent is the tension between the joyous anticipation of the birth of Jesus and the inevitability of the cross… So that at the beginning of things, we think about the end of things”.
There are many services and concerts in the cathedral throughout Advent. See their website for details.
Tomorrow evening, Tuesday December 3, Cathedral Nights: Watching and Waiting takes place at 7pm. Mindful of this extremely busy time of year, the evening makes space to slow down and includes a series of short meditations on Advent themes of hope, peace, joy and love. There will be reflective music and time to pray for yourself, your loved ones and the needs of the world.
