Archbishop attends National Day of Commemoration
Archbishop Michael Jackson represented the Church of Ireland at the National Day of Commemoration in Collins Barracks in Dublin yesterday morning (Sunday July 10). The event honours all Irishmen and Irishwomen who died in past wars or on service with the United Nations.
This year’s event was the first since the Covid 19 pandemic to be open to the public. For the previous two years it was limited to an attendance of 200 people.
President Michael D Higgins laid a wreath on behalf of the people of Ireland following an interfaith service during which the country’s main faith leaders read prayers.
Taoiseach Micheál Martin and members of the Government and Council of State were in attendance along with families of those who have died in past wars or on UN service and descendants of the 1916 leaders. Members of the Diplomatic Corps, Defence Forces, veterans’ organisations, the Judiciary and Northern Ireland representatives were also at the ceremony.
