Songs of Praise Mark 340 Years of Worship in St Mary’s, Blessington
Parishioners of Blessington marked 340 years of worship in St Mary’s Church, on Sunday September 24 with a wonderful Songs of Praise Service.
The guest organist was the exceptionally talented Mrs Lesley Denniston who chose very popular and rousing hymns. Everyone was in full voice and the church resounded with joyful singing. Archdeacon Edgar Swann lead the congregation in the service and gave most interesting insights into the various hymns prior to their singing.
Parishioners were also delighted to have, as their special guest at this ecumenical event, the Revd Deacon Gerry Malone.
St Mary’s Church is home to the oldest original set of bells in Ireland – cast in 1682 by Bartlett of London. Bell ringers from the parish of Taney joined St Mary’s bell ringers and they really did the parish proud with a wonderful contribution to the worship. St Mary’s bells rang out before and after the service.
“Most movingly, the congregation could hear a spectacular peel of bells immediately following the final blessing. It seemed as if St Mary’s herself was sounding out the final song of praise, giving thanks for the many years of worship within her walls,” Joan Griffith, honorary secretary of Blessington Union of Parishes commented. “May we look forward to many more years of worship and song praising God in this hugely historical and much loved church.”
On behalf of the parish she thanked everyone who decorated the church so beautifully and who provided refreshments afterwards in St Kevin’s Community Centre. Special thanks also to Archdeacon Edgar Swann, the Revd Deacon Gerry Malone, Mrs Lesley Denniston (organist) and everyone who joined this very special occasion.
