Fun in the Sun in Irishtown as New School Play Area Opens
The sun shone down on the pupils of St Matthew’s National School in Irishtown yesterday morning (Thursday April 11) for the official opening of their new play area. The beautiful new area provides extra space for the school’s 220 pupils and was purchased from a neighbour of St Matthew’s.
The official ribbon cutting was done by Helen, a pupil in sixth class, with the help of local TD Jim O’Callaghan. Archbishop Michael Jackson gave a blessing. The occasion was also attended by a number of local councillors.
Welcoming the pupils and guests, the Rector of Irishtown and Donnybrook, Canon Leonard Ruddock, explained that the board of management decided to buy part of the neighbour’s garden because it was a unique opportunity to enhance the school’s facilities. He noted that a sensory garden has also been created within the school building.
St Matthew’s principal, Cliodhna O’Reilly, said they were grateful for the beautiful new space which will be used by the children and to David Killion and all who assisted with the project.
Archbishop Michael Jackson gave the children an ‘ABC’. A for ‘active pupils’, B for ‘building confidence’ and C for ‘community spirit’. “Each of these things can happen here in this new space,” he said.
Deputy O’Callaghan said he was thrilled to be present for the opening of the new play area. “Play is so important for children. I hope you and future generations enjoy playing here,” he commented.
To top off the morning of celebration Ms O’Reilly announced that there would be no homework for the children who were overjoyed at the announcement.
