The Orpen Chalice, designed in the style of its ancient predecessor found in Ardagh, Co. Limerick, was recently displayed in the exhibition at Farmleigh, Phoenix Park.  Many will recall its use during the Institution to Stillorgan and Blackrock of the Revd Kevin Conroy in June 2023.

Sir William Orpen: A Family Legacy, was curated by Dominic Lee, from the artist’s archives and featured the work of the Stillorgan man who has often been described as the the greatest of all war artists, bringing to life hopes for peace after conflict.  Visitors saw a curated range of lesser–known paintings, memorabilia, drawings and illustrated letters by William himself, along with watercolours by his father Arthur, and mother Annie; his brother Richard, sister–in–law Cherry, daughter Diana, niece Bea, and cousin, Thomas.

Arthur Herbert Orpen was secretary of the Select Vestry of Stillorgan Parish for 50 years following Disestablishment. The chalice was presented to him by the congregation of Stillorgan in December 1920 on his retirement and then presented to the parish in 1988 by his grandson.

The Farmleigh Gallery is open with free admission to visitors from Tuesday to Sunday and on Bank Holiday Mondays from 10am to 5pm, and closed for lunch from 1pm to 2pm.
