D&G Mothers’ Union Start New Season on a High Note
Members of Mothers’ Union branches from all over Dublin and Glendalough filled St Maelruain’s Church in Tallaght with joyful singing for their Diocesan Festival Service yesterday (Sunday September 15).
The annual service took the form of a ‘Big Hymn Sing’ to raise funds for Mums in May. Mums in May is a Mothers’ Union All Ireland grant scheme which helps fund new and ongoing diocesan projects. Every three years there is a major fundraising drive for the scheme.
The service featured 12 hymns which were chosen and introduced by different branches around the dioceses. Each had special meaning to those who chose it and all were sung with great energy accompanied by the organist of St Maelruain’s.
The service was attended by All Ireland MU President June Butler who said that similar services had been taking place across the island of Ireland for Mums in May and said D&G MU members had done themselves proud. After the service she spoke of the importance of the Mums in May fund and the joy of festival services which bring members together in praise and worship.
Diocesan President, Ada Lawson, thanked everyone for coming to the service and added that the singing had been great. She thanked the Tallaght branch and parish for hosting them and said it was a great way to start the new session. She reminded members that they gather for worship in Christ Church Cathedral on the first Thursday of each month at 11.15am and said all were welcome to join them.
Archbishop Michael Jackson concluded the service with prayer that focussed on the work of Mothers’ Union around the world: promoting social justice, speaking out on issues which adversely affect family life, campaigning on gender equality and justice, and against gender based violence, human trafficking and early marriage, as well as tackling poverty, loneliness and isolation.
