Prayer Movement – A Time of Renewal and Faith
By Geoff Scargill

The soft echo of rain on ancient stone set the scene as the Chapel of Christ Church Cathedral opened its doors for a morning of reflection, hope, and quiet expectancy. Despite the weather—or perhaps because of it—the gathering felt especially intimate, as if the whole city were hushed around us. Within those beautiful surroundings, steeped in centuries of worship, a group from across the Diocese came together with one simple intention: to pray for growth, renewal, and a deeper sense of God’s calling.
Canon Tom O’Brien led a short but deeply resonant service, guiding those present into a rhythm of stillness and reflection. His words created a gentle space in which people could breathe, listen, and allow faith to rise above the noise of everyday life. Moments of silence were embraced rather than endured, becoming a shared act of trust and openness.
Prayers were offered for a renewed journey across our Diocese: for fresh imagination, for the courage to change where change is needed, and for grace to recognise God’s hand at work in both the obvious and the unexpected. The congregation prayed for unity of purpose, for a rekindled sense of mission, and for the wisdom to discern what God is calling us to be—and to do—at this pivotal time.
As the gathering closed, there was a sense of gentle momentum, as if something had quietly shifted. Those present left carrying not just the warmth of shared prayer, but a renewed desire to walk forward together, attentive to God’s leading and ready for the next step of the journey.
