Mothers’ Union Mansion House Exhibition Highlights Domestic Abuse

Mothers’ Union Mansion House Exhibition Highlights Domestic Abuse
Lesley Bayley, MU Southern Social Policy Contact, Ada Lawson, Dublin and Glendalough MU President and Cathy Doig, All Ireland MU Faith and Policy Coordinator,

Mothers’ Union brought their profoundly moving ‘Souls of Our Shoes’ exhibition to the Mansion House in Dublin on Monday (December 1) to raise awareness of domestic abuse. The exhibition is part of Mothers’ Union’s programme for this year’s international 16 Days of Activism Against Gender–Based Violence which runs from November 25 to December 10.

The exhibition features more than 50 pairs of shoes of women, men and children who have walked away from domestic abuse. Each pair of shoes is combined with a comment from their owner to tell their story.

Putting on the exhibition in the Mansion House enabled Mothers’ Union to bring their campaign to break the silence and end domestic abuse to public representatives and decision–makers.

Domestic abuse is pervasive and touches the heart of every community. Mothers’ Union, through its RISE UP Campaign, is working to equip and empower people with the knowledge and skills to help support those impacted by domestic abuse with care and empathy.

Parishes are encouraged to join the Rise Up Award Scheme and the Souls of Our Shoes exhibition is available to any branch, parish or diocese who may wish to borrow it to highlight the issue of domestic abuse and gender–based violence. For more information contact muchangingthestory@gmail.com.

The Church of Ireland organisation, which has over 5,000 members across the island, has been campaigning against domestic and gender–based violence for over 10 years.
