Knitted Bible Project at Christ Church Cathedral: A Novel Way to Engage with Scripture
Christ Church Cathedral, Dublin, is currently hosting a fantastic exhibition which enables people to engage with the stories of the Bible in a new and imaginative way.
The Knitted Bible Project brings 28 scenes from both the Old and New Testaments to life through the creative talents of the Revd Abigail Sines, (former Dean’s Vicar at Christ Church and soon to be Dean of Clonmacnoise), and the Mindful Makers craft group of the Church of the Resurrection in Blarney, County Cork, where she has been serving as Associate Minister.
The exhibition runs in the cathedral until Friday February 13 and the intricate work will delight all who view it.
Mindful Makers was part of Abigail’s creative outreach ministry. Abigail put the idea for the Knitted Bible Project to them and beginning in March 2024 they started work on bringing the ambitious project to fruition. Each participant chose their own story to depict in wool and children from local schools also joined in. Many family members of the knitters were also drafted in to the project to create backdrops and platforms. It made its debut in Blarney in Holy Week 2025 and drew hundreds of visitors from the local area and beyond.
“The project really brought the craft group closer to the Bible stories,” Abigail explained. “They were not just knitting, they had to think about what they were depicting. For example, for the Wedding at Cana scene, we had to research what people would have worn to the wedding and also what the jars that held the water, later wine, would have looked like. They engaged with the well known stories in a new way.”
Christ Church CEO Susanne Reid said she was really delighted to see the Knitted Bible Project displayed in the cathedral.
“The exhibition is a visual demonstration of the talent, love and creativity of the Blarney craft group. It is an extremelya visual reminder to slow down, relax and reflect on the stories of the Biblein these quiet months. and We encourage Dubliners’ and visitors to the city are invited to step off the busy streets and come in and enjoy it. It is also a reminder to all of us us who work in the cathedral that this is a sacred space. and itThis beautiful exhibition is an invitation to reengage with Scripture in a novel way,” she commented.
The Knitted Bible Project can be viewed during cathedral opening hours, normal admission fee applies.
